Nerdy News: May 2013 (and a special giveaway!)

Nerdy News May 2013 and special giveaway

Happy June, everyone! May’s been a big and exciting month for us AND the geekverse; we’re glad to bring you the best tidbits of the past month’s happenings. And, if you sit tight and get to the end of the post, you might even find an opportunity to win something special… so read on and see if your luck holds up! (We here at 3 Chic Geeks do not advocate the acquisition of cursed rabbit feet in order to improve your chances at winning.)

  • Look, a new trailer for Wolverine.
  • If the news outlets covered Tony Stark, this is what the headlines would sound like.
  • Luke Evans has been cast as The Crow.
  • Here, have an Iron Man credits sequence.
  • Iron Man 3 happened… now what?
  • Marvel cast virtual unknown Enzo Ciletti for an unknown role in Guardians of the Galaxy, out April 2014. How mysterious.
  • They’re trying to make a Dungeons & Dragons movie. Again.
  • New Star Wars movie (just how many bloody Star Wars movies are there?) to be filmed in the UK. Did they cast Benedict Cumberbatch yet?
  • Star Trek: Into Darkness screenwriter apologizes for gratuitously half-nude Alice Eve scene, reveals there was going to be shirtless Benedict Cumberbatch scene but it didn’t make it to the final cut because reasons. I’m sorry but I think I would have been a little more okay with Carol Marcus parading around in her skivvies if you had only given me a shirtless Khan. WHYYYYYY.
  • Emma Watson being sensible in zombie movie.
  • Hugh Jackman would like to see a X-Men/Avengers crossover. We would too.
  • Disney finally realizes what a train wreck Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was, attempt to save PotC5 by hiring TWO directors.
  • If you can’t decide whether someone should live or die, we can’t help you (unless you are writing this, in which case kill them all). However, if you’re debating whether you should go see Star Trek: Into Darkness, Iron Man 3 or The Great Gatsby… we got you.

  • The flaw with the Statue of Liberty.
  • Neil Patrick Harris will host the Tony awards again this year. Can we give up and name them the Neil awards already?
  • His Supreme Royal Amazingness, Neil Gaiman, speaks about the TARDIS and Clara.
  • We finally meet the mother on How I Met Your Mother. It’s… anticlimactic.
  • SHIELD TV show. With Coulson. This is so happening.
  • Steven Moffat gives us some insight on how Weeping Angels reproduce.
  • A bunch of season finales happened, including our favorites Supernatural and Doctor Who. Tears occurred.
  • Speaking of tears, here is a beautiful, well-thought out discussion on the evolution and growth of one Dean Winchester.
  • Doctor Who renewed for 8th season. Ob…viously.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch says Sherlock is far too busy to be getting it on this season.
  • Martin Freeman wants to keep doing Sherlock for like, ever.
  • Rumors abound that we’ll be getting a naked Sherlock for Christmas. Thank you, Jesus Hamish Watson Christ Holmes.
  • Baker Street Babes announce they’re organizing a Sherlockian meetup for SDCC. Critique Geek will be there, so you should be too.

  • New Phoenix Wright – Ace Attorney game announced. It is titled Dual Destinies.
  • EA announces the arrival of Sims 4 sometime in 2014; emphasizes that the experience will be “single-player, offline”.
  • EA takes charge of Star Wars games; first new Star Wars games due out approximately April 2014.
  • Actually, piracy isn’t even THAT bad.
  • Microsoft announces the new Xbox 1 gaming console. The people are very angry and it has widely been hailed as a bad move. Suddenly, Sony’s stock is rising, and Redditors arm themselves with pitchforks and torches, ready to lead a lynch mob over the used game charges. Meanwhile, Freak Geek sits upon a throne, shaking her head under the weight of a golden helmet, still playing games made in the early 2000s.
  • Freak Geek is verily displeased that indie gaming is apparently not available as an option for the Xbox 1.
  • Freak Geek also admins a small new gaming community on Reddit. You should subscribe to it if you’re into gaming and have a Reddit account.

And now, for the part you’ve been waiting for…

Win me!

Win me!

As those of you who follow us on Facebook and Twitter may know, Freak Geek was attending Book Expo America 2013 this year. She came across a sale on some posters, and… the posters mysteriously ended up buying themselves and joining Freak Geek’s party, because Unique Geek was not there to be a responsible adult. Freak Geek now finds herself in possession of a ridiculous amount of posters and is doing the logical thing… GIVING THEM ALL AWAY AT RANDOM TIMES FOR RANDOM REASONS BECAUSE WHY THE HECK NOT.

To enter the contest, simply leave a comment below telling us your favorite nerdy news from the month of May. Be sure to include your email address with the comment; a winner will be randomly chosen and contacted via email on Friday, the 8th of June. Please be 18 or older, and a resident of the lower 48 states (because shipping is expensive and we are poor). In addition to contacting the winner via email, we will announce the name of the winner in our Friday post, so if you are not following this blog yet, you should definitely do so!

  1. (Spoiler) Matt Smith is leaving. My life is over. Please give me the poster.

  2. I cannot wait until Fall for the SHIELD tv show!!!! I knew there was no way Coulson was out for the count. So excited to see Clark Gregg and the rest of the cast in action!

    • They basically retconned it once they saw how many people adored Coulson. And then gave him a TV show because he’s awesome.

    • This is going to sound odd but I strongly desire the entire first season of Agents of SHIELD to be terrible. Not “Terra Nova” or “The Cape” terrible but instead to more palatable “Earth: Final Conflict” terrible. Just bad enough for all the greedy twits with designs on franchising the entire affair to get bored and shove off while setting up a boat load of possible interesting plot-lines for it to redeem itself with in S2 and not tying itself down to any particular characters.

Is this likely? No, but the problem is that they’ll appeal to the middle with the writing/action/characters and that’ll keep them afloat for a while but every time they try to do something interesting they’ll have to jump through a dozen production hoops just to get a script out of committee. Then that script will get thrashed by the invested interests of producers who want to keep sucking on the teat of a successful franchise and will ultimately be ruined by its own inability to maintain a consistent standard/exceed its current expectations.

That said this is being aired on ABC, the broadcaster that kept Lost going beyond its shelf-life for the sake of franchising but then turned around and kept V going for the sake of its fans. Either way if its bad I can laugh at something else other than Revolution, which has been providing top notch comedy since the outset, and if its good then maybe I can stop drowning in crime thrillers every week.

  3. so much good nerd news in May 2013 😀 new Xbox announced! 🙂

happy to be a new follower!

  4. Shield show… Can’t wait – It look’s great.

  5. Martin Freeman wants to keep doing Sherlock for like, ever.

  6. Doctor Who renewed for Series 8…oh YES!

    My email:

  7. MY favorite news is the SHIELD show. Long Live Coulson!

  8. Outside of the official announcement of Matt Smith leaving WHO during the Christmas Special, I’d have to go with “Martin Freeman wants to keep doing Sherlock for like, ever.” because Martin Freeman is freaking amazing and adorable. I mean, c’mon. I’d *love* to see Benedict and Martin run around as Sherlock and Watson for like… ever.

  9. All over the SHIELD tv show

  10. I can’t decide between the “Equal Pay!” rage for Avengers 2 or the fact that Sherlock is getting closer to a new season.

  11. The news outlet headlines for Tony Stark are awesome. I really like the one from Fox where Justin Hammer gets his twitter suspended for retweeting the Stark Industries comparison so many times. Made me lol

  12. So excited for Agents of Shield! And upcoming Marvel movies.

  13. I can’t really pick what news I like more. We got Doctor Who news, Star Wars news, Marvel news, there’s just nerdy news out the wazoo!

  14. The teaser release and release of pictures from Thor 2 gave me nerdgasms!

  15. The best news? Paid fanfiction! I had absolute fits of giggles and happy dances for like, fifteen minutes after following that link. I posted on Facebook, and contacted my brother (who always said my fanfiction obsession would never amount to anything). Then I looked at the other link that was included. All I can say is THANK YOU for also posting a warning about the new deal. I hadn’t even considered some of the possible ramifications of submitting my work to Amazon until I read that. I most certainly won’t be giving them my works anytime soon. Not until I see how it’s going to work exactly. Still pretty dang cool though!

  16. There will be a 4th season of Sherlock!! The feels I have can not be put into words ;A;

  17. Hugh Jackman wanting an Avengers/X-Men crossover. That would rock!

  18. Favorite news?

Hugh Jackman would like to see a X-Men/Avengers crossover.

  19. I feel funny not going with S.H.I.E.L.D. but I’m going to say The Sims 4 not being online. As much as The Sims 3 let me down with their money-grabbing online store, it’s great it won’t be an online thing.

    email –

  20. Samuel L. Jackson has been raising money for Alzheimers’ charity by promising to record monologues of his fans’ choosing. That is pretty awesome.

And we’re going to get Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in both the MCU *and* the X-Men CU!

  21. Naked Sherlock! Please give me a poster, preferably Sherlock or Avengers, I don’t have enough of them.

  22. It’s so hard to pick my favorite news. But naked Sherlock is definitely number one followed by finales of Supernatural and Doctor Who.

  23. My favorite nerdy news are finale of Doctor Who, Iron Man 3, Great Gasby, Star Trek: Into Darkness with Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans as the Crow, Emma Watson in a zombie apocalypse movie. Wolverine trailer, Neil Patrick Harris hosting the Tony’s again. SHEILD, Doctor Who re-newed for season 8! If this isn’t nerdy enough, I don’t know what will!

  24. Shield Show! +.+

    My walls need postering!

  25. It’s really hard to choose, but:
“SHIELD TV show. With Coulson. This is so happening.”
I love how Avengers fans (including me) just ignored the fact that Coulson died until he came back.
    Power of fandom!

  26. I love “Mothers sometimes win the internet.” Got to remember that one.

P.S. How cool a mom would I be if I won a poster for my 15 year old to decorate her room with??

  27. Would love to get one of your posters but not a US resident. So that’s fine. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Iron Man credits images though. I’ve wanted them ever since I left the theater. Thanks 🙂 🙂

  28. Matt Smith leaving Doctor Who. I want to know who’s going to be the next Doctor… and how the 11th dies 🙂

  29. Emma Watson being sensible in a zombie movie

  30. My favorite nerdy news this month is probably the return of Dan Harmon to Community, which off-set the sad news of Matt Smith leaving Doctor Who.
